Milestone for European Pharmacists Forum as membership extends to Germany

The European Pharmacists Forum (EPF) reached a milestone recently as two German pharmacists and one Italian pharmacist were announced as the forum's newest members during the latest EPF seminar, which took place on 5 and 6 July 2011 in Istanbul, Turkey.

Wolfgang Kempf, of Rhein-Neckar-Apotheke in Viernheim, near Mannheim and Dr Walter Taeschner of Frosch Apotheke in Lörrach, close to the German-Swiss border, were announced as the first German members of the EPF; bringing the number of countries represented to ten and meaning that Europe's largest pharmaceutical market is now included in the EPF. In addition, Marcello Perego of Farmacia Perego Snc in Vimercate near Milan, was announced as a new member, bringing the number of Italian pharmacists in the EPF to four. These new members bring a combined experience of more than sixty years in the pharmacy profession.

The EPF seminar in Istanbul brought together pharmacists from across the ten member countries, including about a hundred Turkish pharmacists invited as special guests to the event and senior representatives from Hedef Alliance*. Over the course of the two days, delegates took part in a number of presentations and workshops looking at key aspects of European pharmacy. Keynote speakers included Ethem Sancak, Chairman and Necat Sancak, Executive Committee Member from Hedef Alliance; Ornella Barra and Tricia Kennerley of Alliance Boots and external speakers Bülent Eczacbasi, President, Eczacibasi Group, and Mehmet Domac, Pharmacist and Member of the Turkish Parliament.

Ornella Barra, EPF member and Chief Executive, Pharmaceutical Wholesale Division, Alliance Boots, commented: "As one of the founders of the EPF, I am delighted to be welcoming Marcello, Walter and Wolfgang to the forum and I am sure that their addition will be very positive for our future. By having Germany now represented in the EPF, we have further strengthened our voice as a pan-European organisation. This, combined with the addition in March of new members from Turkey, means that we have an even broader knowledge and contact base to support us in ensuring that the needs of the pharmacy profession are recognised at European level."
